Happy DIY Saturday! If you’re organizing any event, from a romantic dinner to a brunch party for friends and up to a wedding dinner, here is an easy and inexpensive idea to add ambience and a romantic touch to the table at any occasion: lampshades using wine glasses. You can use any wine glass you have at hand, even different types to arrange a centerpiece.

Who would of thought that wine glasses and votive candles could make such a decorative element to your dining room table or wedding! Today’s DIY Saturday will show you how to create these lovely lampshades that can be customized to your decor or event.

Note: Make sure you use battery operated votive candles and not real candles to prevent a fire.

Materials:

  • Wine or champagne glasses
  • Wine glass lampshades
  • Battery operated tea light candles (LED tea lights)

There is a great variety of lampshades available for purchase. So, if you buy the shades, the only thing you will need to do is to assemble them and put the lamps together. If you’d like to make the shades by yourself, just follow these simple instructions.

To make your own shades, you will need:

  • For the shades: Vellum, cardboard, fabric, tracing -, wrapping-, tissue-, scrapbook or any other patterned paper, fabric. Anything can be used, as long as it can hold its shape. Also, keep in mind that the type of material you choose will affect the amount of light it will let through.
  • Wine glass lampshade templates (there are a lot of different templates available online for free)
  • Hot glue pen, glue stick or double sided tape, depending on the lampshade material you want to use
  • Scissors
  • For decoration (optional): decorative scissors, decorative paper punch

Directions

  1. Print and cut out the template you chose. Try it out to make sure it fits on your glass. Adjust the size if necessary. Using the template, trace it on your material and cut the shape.
  2. Use the decorative scissors and/or the paper punch to decorate your shade.
  3. Secure the ends of the shade, by gluing them together

Now, place a tea light inside the glass. If needed, you can use some decorative sand to stabilize the tea light. Finally, put the shade on the glass. Done!

These easy to make lampshades are great for décor, but they can also make a wonderful gift for your guests to take home.
