If you have a small home your living room can look very cramped. It makes you feel like you’re living in a match box. Everyone wants to live in a airy and spacious house and small rooms can cause depression in some individuals. But, let’s be practical here, bigger space will cost more and you may have to buy or rent a small room if your bank accounts are not brimming with cash.

The eye can be deceived. By using some tricks you can make your living room appear bigger than it actually is. It’s not exactly going to make it stretch. If you were to get out your measuring tape it would still be the same size. It doesn’t matter though, because the only thing that matters is the way you feel. If it seems bigger you’re happy. Here’s how to do it.
Condense furniture
How many pieces of furniture do you have in the room? It’s probably going to be a few and it doesn’t need to be. Buy something that can be used for more than one purpose. Like you could have a television stand that also comes with a bookshelf. That’s just saved you from needing one more thing. See if you can do it with more.
Don’t go too high
If you have rather large furniture it’s going to be close to the ceiling and it will seem like there is less space. Even though it doesn’t really matter. It’s not like you can do anything with the space between a cabinet and the ceiling, but it can still trick you into thinking the room is smaller if there isn’t a lot of space.
Arrange it properly
With large furniture they should be against the wall. Don’t have them out in the middle of the room. It’s only going to give the effect of less space. It also makes them look a lot neater when they’re stacked together in the same place. If this is too hard, try the best you can.

Use color
Brighter rooms give off the feeling of more space. Make sure your walls are painted in a light color. You could also try to make sure some of your furniture is the same color as the walls. It will almost look like it’s blending in, at least in your head.
Go for glass
If you have a table in the middle of the room it should be made from glass. Although it’s not a good idea to have something lying in the middle of the room, you might still want one. If you can see through it you’ll think there’s more space. Funny how the eyes work.
Use natural light
Keep your curtains open when it’s still light outside. Natural light really opens up space and works a lot better than artificial lighting. Obviously this won’t make too much of a difference during the night. Just add more lights when it gets dark and go for brighter bulbs.

Have big mirrors
And this doesn’t mean you should stop every 2 seconds to admire yourself. Having mirrors will make your room look bigger. Try to go for big long ones and you can check yourself out before you go to work. Put one near a window to let the light shine on. It really works.
