Olioboard Inspiration – Patriotic Memorial Day Picnic Celebration

Entry #2452, May 24, 2013

Today we continue Stagetecture’s feature ‘Olioboard Inspiration‘. Last week you enjoyed Cynthia Blaine’s – ‘Creating an Inspiring Unisex Kids’ Room‘ and this week I bring you Lisa Ketz a member of the Facebook Olioboard Fan Room. I asked her to create a festive Memorial Day outdoor celebration. She did a great job of showing how a patriotic picnic celebration can honor our fallen heroes and enjoy our family and friends to welcome in Summer!

If you’re interested in being featured see details here: How to be featured on Stagetecture’s Olioboard Inspiration‘ series.

‘Patriotic Memorial Day Picnic Celebration –  Lisa Ketz

Memorial Day weekend is here! The U.S. holiday is viewed by many as the official start of summer. It falls on the last Monday in May. The traditional celebration usually involves a good ole family barbeque. Many towns also hold a Memorial Day Parade and wreath laying ceremony at a local veteran’s memorial. Veteran’s organizations place small American Flags at the burial sites of all military veterans.

The History of Memorial Day:

Memorial Day is, in fact, a day of remembrance. According to Wikipedia, Memorial Day was formerly known as Decoration Day. The holiday began after the Civil War. Originally, we honored those who died in the service of their country. As time passed it came to be a day to honor all those who had died before us. Family members would come together at the cemetery to place flowers in remembrance of their loved ones. As a part of this family reunion a potluck picnic or what was known as a dinner on the ground would take place.

Memorial Day Picnic Ideas:

As I see it a picnic wouldn’t be a picnic without a wooden table with attached benches. Sure you can use a propane grill, but I think the smell and flavor of a real charcoal fire is a must. The standard fare I grew up with was hot dogs, hamburgers and barbequed chicken. Cold salads of potato and macaroni start to make there appearance for the season now as well.

The best way to protect your picnic from insects is a GrillPro 80100 food umbrella. Also, you don’t need a fancy cooler. Any galvanized pail will work to hold ice cubes and your favorite beverages. Of course, to reflect the original patriotism behind the holiday, décor of red, white and blue is a must.

I hope to enjoy the holiday with family and friends and after the recent events in Boston I think this Memorial Day will take on an even greater meaning.
