We all want a lush green golf course for a lawn, but most of us are a bit more environmentally conscientious, wanting to avoid adding harsh chemicals to our lawns. So how can we have the best of both – a lush green lawn and avoid all those harsh chemicals? Luckily, there are some great environmentally friendly ways to grow green, weed-free grass and still enjoy an eco-friendly outdoor home. Here are a few tips you may not have considered.

Coffee grounds:
Yes, you read that correctly. Coffee grounds can actually perk up your lawn! Go to your local coffee shop and ask them to stash away all their used coffee grounds in a large garbage bag (most will happily do this for free). Once a week, go and pick up your used coffee grounds and lay them out to dry on a large tarp. Once grounds have dried for a day, pour them into a normal fertilizer spreader and away you go; spread them over your entire lawn, then water. Guaranteed– in one week your lawn will be lusher, greener and quickly growing! Coffee grounds act as a free fertilizer without the chemicals! Conserving water the right way:
Conserving water is important, but remember a well-watered lawn grows well, and if the lawn is thick and growing then there is less room for weeds to creep in; therefore less need for fertilizers and weed chemicals.
Enjoy a natural landscape:
Why not have less grass and more garden? Even better, a garden full of natural plants that may be considered weeds but are pretty, functional, and natural!
A few of these plants are: yarrow, meadow grass, corn marigold, poppy, speedwell, garlic mustard, etc…
Simply search your areas natural resource listings for native, non-invasive plants that will work in your garden.

Hardscape can be beautiful:
Get rid of your lawn altogether by starting a rock/stone landscape interspersed with succulents that require very little care and water. This type of landscape works well in drier climates, where watering your lawn is usually limited by homeowner association regulations.
If you are unsure of green landscaping practices in your region consider calling a landscape professional for tips on maintaining a green lawn in green ways.
