Guest Blogger #262, Entry #770, November 20, 2011

Lighting is one of the most imperative aspects of every space in our homes. The mood and the theme of the living space can be determined by how the lighting is done, no matter the dimensions or size.

Have you ever wondered why restaurants have muted lighting in some areas? Or why some offices interiors are so bright? Actually, different kinds of lights are used for different purposes – light is instrumental in setting the mood of every space, not forgetting to stir up different senses.

There is no hue without light. Consecutively, there is no aesthetic without hue. And space without aesthetic is like nature without attraction.

By understanding the different options lighting can offer, one can customize and personalize the space. So lets demystify the options for creative lighting.

Consider employing an interior design consultant

We all know lighting is a huge part in the home. Choosing the appropriate lighting can provide us with a suitable design for each living space. It is therefore a good option to seek interior design consultancy, since the two integral pillars of a favorable design in any location are a strong foundation, followed by perfect lighting. Most consultants make it a priority to educate their clients on the need for proper lighting even before the construction or building process is totaled. If the construction is already complete, then they offer lighting solutions that will suit the space.

Ultimately, lighting is a mode of decoration and brings life to any room – be it a living room or kids room. Lighting can be magical and can enchant spells or make a space as bright as the sun and as inviting as possible. There are a diverse range of chandeliers, LED lights, wall brackets, garden lights, recess lights, basket lights, ceiling lights and floor lamps available, so that it can be difficult to make the right choice. However, with the help of a consultant, the right lighting solution can truly light up your life!

Different creative lighting techniques for different rooms

Creativity is thinking about doing something different and everyone is creative in one way or the other. If one chooses the right fixtures, it can enhance the mood of your space and make the most out of the interior decorations. Lighting solutions are known to transform living and working spaces all round. So what are the different options?

  • Firstly, there is general or ambient lighting, which illuminates the entire room. This is suitable for living rooms and kitchens, where light is necessary for a clear vision. Track lights are also ideal for kitchens, as well as for areas that require focus – they are flexible and easy to maneuver.
  • Secondly, task lighting is specifically for study and reading. It is anti-glare, giving clear light for strain-free sight.
  • The third is accent lighting, usually used on some eminent feature, sculpture, painting or an architectural facet that bring a protruding effect in the room. Be careful, as these lights are triple in brightness than any other lighting – seldom used in homes though preferred to fit within museums, hallways and halls.
  • Lastly, not to forget Mother Nature’s resources – when utilized well, light comes into a space via doors, windows and vast skylights.
