Guest Blogger: Home Decor Inspired from the World of Fashion

 Guest Blogger #293, Entry #826, December 9, 2011

Anyone who is interested in the many fields of design can no doubt draw parallels between them, seeing both structural and creative elements and themes mirrored in various forms throughout the worlds of fashion, architecture, art, automobiles, and so on.  So if you’re looking for inspiration when you remodel your home, consider setting aside your copy of Architectural Digest and thumbing through some haute couture catalogs.  You might be surprised by the ideas you can get from seeing the latest styles to saunter down the runway.  And here are just a few designers that could provide the aesthetic you’re seeking.

Coco Chanel

No single word can describe the Chanel brand better than sophisticated.  Both simple and luxurious, both flattering and comfortable, both masculine and feminine, Coco Chanel’s design style was one that is difficult to emulate simply because it was so elegantly understated.  But if you want to create your interior spaces to embody the look and feel of this incomparable fashion designer, look to classical and streamlined styles with just a touch of the unexpected.  And when you think you’re finished, pare it down just a bit.

Vivienne Westwood

No one does punk princess quite like Westwood, but you don’t necessarily have to gravitate towards garish splashes of color in order to adopt the hallmarks of her signature style.  The real trick is to strike a balance between beauty and the bizarre.  All you have to do is look at her hair to get the picture; she’s more Carrot Top than strawberry blonde.  And her designs follow suit by taking details to the next level.  So if you start with a neutral base, spice it up with splashes of color and attention-grabbing, one-of-a-kind accent pieces.

Dolce & Gabbana

The two designers behind this label (Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana) have long dominated both women’s and menswear for decades thanks to sharp lines and body-hugging silhouettes meant to flatter and enhance the human form.  Their sleek and sexy looks blend classic and modern sensibilities flawlessly to create pieces that are at once timeless and totally new.  So rather than compiling a mish-mosh of eclectic pieces in your home, take a page from D&G; consider why and how they complement each other before you throw them together.

Chris March

Although this lovable and outspoken designer didn’t win Project Runway (could anyone have beaten Christian Siriano?), the designer who prides himself on his flair for creating costumes for drag queens has gone on to have a lucrative career sculpting outrageous hair pieces (a big hit on the runway), over-the-top ensembles, and otherworldly commercial spaces.  He’s even designed stunning and elegant pieces for celebrity fans like Meryl Streep and Beyoncè.  So what can you take from his design aesthetic?  Although his style is often loud, there’s no denying that he is unafraid to take chances and create pieces that are bold and personal.  You, too, can do this in your home.

Stella McCartney

This modern fashion designer is well known for her comfortable and flowy designs, muted palette, and her penchant for eco-friendly living.  So if you want a space that is not only stylish and extremely livable, but also in keeping with your environmental sensibilities, this laid-back designer may provide some easy ideas to incorporate into your home.

I absolutely adore this post. The rooms decor is so uniquely beautiful just as the designers themselves.
