Guest Blog Entry #33, Entry #344, November 30, 2010
The outside of your home is often neglected when the fall and winter months set in. Although, the exterior of your home is the best place to focus on for home improvements when it is the ‘off season’. Materials may be cheaper in your area, laborers may be more abundant and when its finished, you will be ready to entertain in grand style! Today my guest blogger, Rob Stone shows you how it may be time for your home to have a relaxing deck.

Now is the perfect time to add a deck to your home!
Whatever age we are or from whatever walk of life we come from there has to be a time when we need to relax and re-energize ourselves. In winter time we have to make do with being indoors but at the first sign of spring our thoughts immediately turn to the balmy summer days ahead and perhaps sitting in the garden with a good book and a long cool drink. Perhaps a barbecue is being prepared in the background.
For the past few years the grass may have been good enough to sit on with a few chairs dotted about but if the weather was to turn wet in late July or August then days could be lost. However with a permanent patio or decking then you could be outside again as soon as the sun came out rather than waiting for the grass to dry. A deck can be used just for relaxing on or you can play on it with the children. So lets go ahead and deck the garden, or part of it at least.
Like any reasonably large project it needs thought and consideration prior to doing literally anything else. Your first thoughts should concern where it is going to be situated. If you have a beautiful view from a certain area of the garden then your decision is made for you but with the standard UK home there is limited space to deal with. Consider the neighbors if their house is close by.
Consider also the size. If space is limited then you do not need a large deck. Just make the deck proportional to the house. A small home and garden will look odd with a very large deck.

Relaxation is the main purpose of a deck
If it is possible then build the deck near to the kitchen as this will eliminate any lengthy walking to and fro with the food and drinks when you are also eating outside. If the deck is to be attached to the house, then what about sliding doors to reach the outside from the kitchen.
For those with ample space you can divide your deck into separate or different areas. One part can be used for reading and relaxing and another area for dining and eating generally. Make sure you take into account which way the foot traffic will travel so that anyone relaxing will not have the problem of others continuously walking in front or next to them.
If due care and attention is given to the building of the deck then you can rely on countless hours of enjoyment for many years into the future for you and your family. It may even increase the value of your home not that you would want to consider moving with a new deck in place. We work hard so we deserve to relax well.
