Important Fall Maintenance Checklist for Your Home

Guest Blogger #677, Entry #1607, September 17, 2012

With cool, crisp weather heading your way, it is the perfect time to prepare your home for its long winter hibernation. Whether you live in a colder or warmer climate, fall is the perfect time to tackle much needed maintenance around the house before the temperatures get too unbearable. There are lots of maintenance needs of your home year-round, but here are a few tips to organize your home and prepare it for the fall and winter months:

Clean out your gutters:

With fall leaves, come blocked gutters. Once most of the trees in your yard have shed their leaves, grab a ladder and clear out those gutters. It is much better to clear out the leaves and debris before winter hits because waiting until next spring will leave you with a large, soggy disaster on your hands.

Have your furnace serviced:

Servicing your furnace is best left to the professionals and it can save you a lot of money in the long run. Call a local heating and cooling professional to check on your furnace before the time comes to turn up the heat. Whether you have www.boilerandspares in your home or you have a central heating unit, either of them should be serviced by a professional. A pro can clean out the furnace and ensure that it is in perfect working order, keeping you warm and toasty in those cold winter months.

Caulk or seal your windows:

caulking around any little cracks and crevices on your window frames can really block those cold drafts and save on your heating bill.

Buy a few draft stoppers:

Look around your local home hardware store for those long cloth-covered draft stoppers that can be put at the base of your entry doors. These stoppers go a long way in blocking drafts and again saving you money on your heating bill.

Clean your fireplace:

Wood burning fire place maintenance is a must! Debris builds up in your chimney, increasing the risk of house fires. Call a local professional to clean out your chimney and wood stove. Once it has been properly cleaned, you can use those creosote burning logs once a month to ensure your chimney remains clean and clear.

Once all your work is done, you are ready to settle in under a warm blanket with a good book, or just get cozy for a long winters nap by the fire.
