When designing any contemporary space, it is important to stick to the basics of modernism in terms of furniture and focal point colors. The very basic colors of modern design are black and white.  Metallic colors such as black, white, and gray or chrome provide the basis for any contemporary color scheme. Most modern furniture pieces use such colors in their construction materials like glass, stainless steel and black leather. When working with a modern living space in particular, here are several ideas to keep in mind when designing that ultra-modern black and white interior.

Choosing the right sofa and furniture

 

When designing any living room space it is best to use a neutral colored sofa.  Starting with a solid colored sofa in a neutral tone provides a nice foundation from which to build the rest of the interior design.  From there, use accent pillows and patterned chairs to give the space the pops of color and depth it needs.

When working with a modern living space featuring a black and white color scheme, start with a dark grey sofa.  Solid dark grey is a happy medium between black and white. This particular sofa by IKEA features an ultra-contemporary form with its straight lines and sharp corners. By using a solid dark grey sofa such as this, you can add pops of interest and color in the form of black, white or silver pillows. Use patterned pillows with chevron or lines for even more added interest.

Choose a rug that compliments the rest of your space

Area rugs are extremely important in defining a space as well as adding color and texture to a room. Area rugs can be used anywhere such as underneath coffee tables, in front of sofa tables or underneath chairs. Area rugs also provide a sense of coziness and warmth within a space no matter what the design style may be.

In the case of a contemporary black and white living room, this particular rug is a deep charcoal color which coordinates nicely with the dark grey sofa.  This area rug features pops of color and texture in the form of detailed white and light grey square designs . Such patterns again provide added interest and give the space some depth and aesthetic appeal.

Coffee tables can enhance your room

Coffee tables are an essential element to any formal living room space. They not only are a conversation piece but can serve as a focal point for the room as well. Coffee tables provide an additional avenue for placing décor accessories, as well as providing storage and display space in a living room.
