Important Tips to Help Pack for International Travel

One of the most exciting things about international travel is packing up your luggage. That’s the time when it starts to feel real, and at times, challenging. If you have never or rarely traveled internationally, you are bound to be overwhelmed and confused with what to pack. But don’t fret; these international travel tips will help you get started.

Make a travel check list

Every destination has its unique packing requirement, so start with the list of things that you would pack for any trip. Once basics are covered, customize the list by adding items depending on the weather and duration of your trip. It’s advised to do some research about the place you are traveling to. Check off items from the list as you pack them.

Carry-on luggage

What if your checked baggage does not arrive on time? Sounds scary, right? Even though such a scenario may be rare, keep the odds in your favor and pack all your essentials and valuable in a carry-on luggage.  Things like medications, smaller electronics, and at least a day’s change of clothes should be packed in your carry-on bag. Also, for ease of access, put your travel documents-tickets, passport etc in an easy to reach pocket of your handbag or carry-on.

Weigh your luggage carefully

Baggage policies vary by airline, so do check with the airline on maximum weight allowed, excess baggage fees, and number of free luggage allowed per person. To avoid unnecessary expense at the airport, make sure to weigh your luggage beforehand and split items evenly, if carrying more than one bag.

Secure it

Put your name, address, and telephone number on the luggage tag as well as inside it to ensure faster recovery if it gets misplaced. Also, to prevent luggage mix-ups at the claim area, tie a small colorful ribbon around the handles. This will help you to easily identify your bags. To secure your items inside and prevent accidental spills, make sure to place liquid containers in plastic bags.

Whether traveling for work or leisure, smart and careful packing can save you from scrambling in a foreign land. So use these tips along with your best judgment for your next trip abroad.
