When first moving into a new house, there’s a tendency to go over the top and invest heavily in decoration. After a few years have gone by, however, the gloss of the paint begins to fade and we begin to contemplate a little redecoration.
With the living room being one of the most important and central rooms in the house, it’s a great place to begin the facelift process. And that facelift need not cost the earth; it can be done on a tight budget, with just a little creative thought.

Make the most of your space
You’ll hear this repeated by designers the world over, but it’s imperative that this little piece of advice is internalised: make the most of your space.
The simplest way to begin this process is to de-clutter your living room. After years of collecting meaningless stuff, it’s time to throw out all those unwanted little keepsakes, to maximise the size of the space you have to work with.
If you’re really looking to increase the feel of the size of your living room, however, you may like to consider turning said room and kitchen into an open-plan space. While the idea of knocking down a dividing wall may be daunting, the internet makes accessing Top Tradespeople extremely straightforward, risk-free and cost-effective.
Add a feature wall
With your new blank canvas, it’s imperative to draw focus to one area of the room. Often people subconsciously do this using a television set, but, if you’re looking to make a striking impact on your guests, consider creating a feature wall.
Ideally, your feature wall will be home to a small fire or an artefact of interest. Using the fireplace as the focal point of the room, bold colours and patterned wallpaper are the order of the day; the bolder the better and don’t be afraid to experiment. The idea is to create a striking feature that immediately jumps out and grabs the attention of your guests.

Remove that dowdy carpet
When decorating a living room, many people often choose to lay a carpet. While there’s nothing wrong with that, the chances are that your floorboards could be turned into a stunning feature of the room themselves, with just a little care and attention.
So, throw out that dowdy carpet and unearth the hidden value in those floor boards. The chances are that with a little varnish, and some buffing, you can create a whole new feel and really give your living room the much-needed facelift it requires.
The finishing touches
By now, your living room should have an altogether different vibe, so it’s time to give it that little touch of class.
When it comes to adding the finishing touches, lighting is a great place to start. Adding a small chandelier is an effective way to add some style to your living room, while a dimmer switch means that the mood of your room will be suited to all entertaining occasions.

With the lighting taken care of, it’s time to go shopping. Local markets and second-hand shops are a great place to pick up coloured glass vases, quirky candle holders, intriguing photo frames or antique bits and pieces; all of which cost a lot less than you might imagine.
Sprinkling these little accessories around your living room will really help to put your living room over the top, as well as giving you the chance to add a little personality to the equation.
