How to Prep Your Home for Summer Vacation

Summer is the perfect time to get away. You can leave the city and escape to your favorite spot to relax and rejuvenate. However, it is important to prep your home before you pack the bags and fill up the car. Use these summer vacation tips to keep your home safe and save money.

Conserve Energy

Turn off the air conditioner and unplug computers, stereos, and TVs. If you use a programmable thermostat, set the air conditioning to start again before you return. This ensures you don’t come back to a stuffy house. Electronic gadgets draw energy while in standby mode. This energy can add up over days and weeks. Turn them off to reduce your energy bills.

Water heaters work hard to keep water warm even during warm weather. Adjust your tank’s setting to the lowest temperature. If it has a “vacation mode” setting, use that when going on vacation.

Get the Pool Ready

Run the pool pump to keep algae at bay and reduce its runtime to about 6 hours a day. Also cover the pool well to stop it from getting dirty and to prevent water from getting lost to evaporation. The last thing you want to see when you come back from vacation is a pool filled with twigs, leaves, and debris.

Keep Your Home Safe

Thieves love robbing vacationing homeowners as they know the robbery will not be detected for days or weeks. To keep your home safe, cover the basics. Put your magazine and newspaper subscriptions on hold, get a friend to pick up your mail, and hire someone to mow your lawn. Thieves won’t know the house is unoccupied and will keep off. You can also install a timer for the lights to make sure the house isn’t dark at night.

Prep Your Plants

Ask a neighbor or a friend to water your plants while you are away and leave them a list of all the plants and their locations. If you can’t find anyone to water your plants, invest in an automated watering system or self-watering plant stakes.

These summer vacation tips will help you to have peace of mind while you are away. You can relax and enjoy your vacation without stress or worry.
