Use Built-In Timers

The use of built-in timer can be another great option to save your monthly electric bill. It will be very effective in case of holiday lights or space heaters this winter. You also do not have to worry about turning off the gadgets before going out. For big gadgets like computers and TVs, use smart power strip that will shut down the power outlet when gadgets switch into standby mode. In case of desktop computers, keeping them ‘hibernate’ or ‘sleep mode’ will save nearly equal energy as unplugging them.

Focus on Light Usage

A simple habit that can greatly save your wallet is to remember to turn off the lights when you are going outside or leaving a room. In addition, try to limit the use of lights by using work lights and table lamps. Turn on the larger overhead lights only when necessary.

Another way to save on lighting is to turn off the porch light after you get home, especially when you are the last one home at night. Keep the porch light off except for parties or other occasions if your street is lit with streetlights. Plus, you can also keep them off during moonlit nights.

Do Some Clean-up

Your habit of keeping everything neat and clean can also save your electric bill. Your fridge will use less electricity to become cold if you keep its coils clean. Keep your dishwasher drain clean. It will ensure flow of clean water through the drain. As a result, you do not have to wash the dishes twice and burn more power. In addition, dry the dishes naturally instead of using the dishwasher’s dish drying function.
