Guest Blogger: 6 Wonderful Ways to Dress Your Windows

Guest Blogger #733, Entry #1715, October 12, 2012

Connecting the outside world to the interior of your home, windows are incredibly important when it comes to your overall home decor. Not only do they allow natural light to fill your living spaces, but they can also become a key focal point when dressed correctly.

Whilst some may think the act of dressing windows requires nothing more than the quick addition of a pair of curtains, the truth is that there are far more options than this. Here are six inspirational options for those looking to transform their windows into something truly spectacular:

Update your home with window treatment ideas

1. Sophisticated blinds

One of the most popular items of household decor, sophisticated blinds have almost replaced curtains entirely in some modern homes. Roman and roller blinds are the most common varieties, using a single sheet of material which folds down to cover the window snugly.

These are a great option for contemporary properties and are available in a variety of colour options, allowing you to highlight accent colours from your chosen scheme. This ‘Dim Out Roll Up Blind’ in Fuchsia is a perfect example of the options available:

Alternatively, venetian blinds in sleek aluminium are perfect for those who love futuristic designs. The added benefit of this option is you can adjust the position of the blind slats to allow light into the room without uncovering your window entirely – perfect for those who want to increase natural light but retain their privacy.

2. Perfect pleats

For those who lean towards minimalism, pencil pleat curtains could be the way to go. There are plenty of options, from plain cream varieties such as these Blackout Lined Curtains to bolder styles such as these Baroque Curtains in striking olive green.

3. Fun children’s curtains

It’s not just adults who want beautiful curtains. Children are equally in need of some attractive window dressings. Children’s curtains are typically centred on popular TV characters with these Ben 10 and Hello Kitty options serving as perfect examples:

Those shopping for older children or looking for a design which will stand the test of time may find more conservative options with pastel shades and simple stripe patterns, as exhibited by the Living Red Stripe Taylor Curtains.

4. Pelmets

A more traditional option, adding a pelmet to your windows is a great way to give your interior style another dimension. These work best with curtains which fit along runners rather than modern table top designs and come in a great range of options – from the plain and simple Whiteheads Livia option in ivory to the more intricately decorated Whiteheads Poppy Red option.

5. Layers

Layering curtains could be a great idea for anyone who is looking to create depth with their window dressings, but is perhaps reluctant to opt for a pelmet. Thick net curtains look great in older properties when hung underneath pleated curtains, whilst modern properties could benefit from plain blinds or thinner nets which use panel detailing – such as these Living Net Voile Curtain Panels.

6. Accessories

Lastly, dressing your windows doesn’t just have to be about fabric and curtains. Accessories are just as important in creating the right look for your room so give finials, such as this great scratched ball design in black gloss, and tiebacks sufficient attention.

Fabric tiebacks are the most traditional option, but must be carefully matched to the colour or pattern of the curtains themselves. Those after a more modern option which can be used universally with almost any curtain should consider options like Crackle Ball Curtain Holdbacks in stainless steel.
