Today, we look at the interior space of your home. If you have an open floor plan, or rooms that seem to large or spacious to create intimate conversation areas, today’s guest post is for you. Many homeowners want to create interior “walls” but don’t want to remodel.
Guest Blogger, Arcadian Home joins us and discusses how to make your interior home feel more comfortable and versatile without having to do an overhaul on your home!

In many modern homes the great room or living room / dining room combination are overwhelmingly large spaces. Decorating for optimal functionality of this room can be a challenge at best and is a common problem many interior designers are asked to deal with.
Ideally to get the most out of the space, a large open room needs multiple conversation and activity areas. How do you accomplish this without remodeling, closing in the space and dividing the room with walls? Some of the furniture you may already own will work wonders in creating fifth and sixth walls resulting in the warm, intimate areas you desire. The following pieces make terrific walls:
Armoires, Bookcases & Etageres
These three pieces offer the most wall area height-wise. An armoire acting as a wall can also double as a media center for your TV and electronics. Bookcases can be used alone or in multiples to create as much division as you require. A backless ÈtagËre is best to use if you would like to let the light flow through the room yet still create smaller areas. If the furniture you are using to create walls has an unfinished back it can be painted, mirrored, tiled or upholstered and made to look finished from both sides.
Buffets, Credenzas & Sofa Tables
All of these furnishings create a visual division but do not offer a closed-in space like the bulkier pieces mentioned above. To create height and privacy, place a pair of buffet lamps, candelabras or a floral arrangement in a decorative bowl on top. All three of these ideas, when placed behind an opposite facing sofa, make perfect dividers without having to paint or cover their unfinished backs.
Sofas, Chairs & Chaise Lounges
The least visually confining of all furniture walls, can still visually divide your space while letting light flow through the room. Create several groupings of sofas, side tables and occasional chairs by placing identical sofas back to back.Chaise lounges work well with a side table to create a focal point and break up the room.
A word of caution, just because you are not remodeling does not mean you do not have to plan ahead. Make a list of all of the activities you would like to perform in your large space. Measure the space and the furniture you already own then create a furniture floor plan. Purchase additional pieces if your space requires and add them to scale onto to your floor plan before attempting to rearrange furniture and create the spaces you need. This will save you time and money in the long run.

I think bookcases is better than to build a real wall since with book cases you can easily rearrange the interior from time to time.
