Guest Blogger: Defining your Interiors with Dynamic Area Rugs

Guest Blog #66, Entry #508, April 28, 2011

Your home interiors can always benefit from a blast of color and texture, and area rugs are the perfect way to do it. Area rugs are versatile, can be moved around according to your furniture, and they make a neutral room come alive instantly!

Today, our Guest Blogger, Mitchell Gavillion, gives us a look at how to use area rugs to make your interiors sing! Whether it is in your baby’s nursery, your master bedroom, or the living room, area rugs are a must have in today’s modern interiors.

Area rugs can really open new doors when it comes to decorating your home. Since rugs are so versatile they can be both practical and decorative in any room. When you are decorating with rugs it helps to be aware of a few helpful hints when selecting your rug for you home of office.

The tips listed below for decorating for rugs are simply suggestions and ultimately it is up to you how you see fit to decorate. In the end what really matters is what you like and if you are pleased with the overall, finished product of your home or office.

One of the most important things to invest in when using decorative rugs is a rug pad. Rug pads should be used under rugs wherever they are placed whether it is on carpet or bare floors. Rugs wear out from the bottom due to the friction caused by walking on them. A rug pad will slow down the wear and also prevent a rug from slipping if placed on a bare floor.

Use the Internet websites that specialize in rugs when shopping for a decorative rug. Going to local stores to browse and get advice from a professional when shopping can help give you guidance, suggestions and understanding of the various types of fabrics available when selecting the perfect rug for your room.

When placing your area rug try and avoid having the corner of the rug in the middle of a doorway or opening of an adjoining room or at the edge of a pathway. Having your rug placed like this makes it easy to trip over. Using rugs in high traffic areas is a great idea as long as they are placed carefully.

When you have a large open room a quaint sitting area can be made by placing a few overstuffed chairs and a smaller table around a rug with lighter colors or a subtle pattern. This creates a warm, clam environment conducive to small talk, tea or reading. If your home has a fireplace that is the perfect place for this type of arrangement. Rugs can really define an area and set it apart from the rest of the room. While integrating an area rug with surrounding furniture, a common placement for chairs is to have the front legs of the chairs on the rug or even all four if the rug is large enough.

Area rugs can help you create whatever look and feel you want for your home. Consider that rugs last a long time and you will most likely have the rug for many years. Explore colors, bold designs as well as practicality to find what works best with your lifestyle and taste and you are sure to love how a rug can change the look and feel of a room.

What a great post on area rugs! It’s the details that really complete the look of a room. Great point about the rug pad, very few people incorporate safety when they design. I enjoyed this , thank you!
