With today’s strong emphasis on protecting the environment, it’s important for each of us to do our part when it comes to conserving resources and leaving a small carbon footprint. Many people are turning to eco-friendly homes in order to protect the environment, which leads to the question – how do you run an eco-friendly home?
- One of the most important and obvious things you can do in your home is to decrease your electricity and gas bills. There are all sorts of simple ways you can do this:
Some examples include:
- Not leaving lights on throughout your home,
- Only running full loads of laundry/dishes,
- Trying to reduce the length of your hot showers,
- Turning off electronics (computer, TV, DVD player) when you aren’t using them,
- Installing energy efficient light bulbs,
- And making sure your house is properly insulated (doors and windows) so as not to lose heat in the winter or cool air in the summer.
- Recycling has really caught on with people from all walks of life. The same goes with composting. You can cut down on the amount of household garbage you accumulate simply by making sure you recycle and compost.
- Install low-flow water flushing mechanisms in all your toilets. Even though your toilet will use less water when flushing, it will still get the job done and you’ll have the added bonus of saving money on your water bill. Another way to save water is to turn the tap off when you’re brushing your teeth, or even while you soap up in the shower. Or alternatively, using rainwater harvesters to capture rain water to wash your clothes or wash the car.
- Grow your own herbs, fruits, and vegetables. Not only is this great for the environment but it will allow you to become more self-sufficient.
- Teach the entire household about the importance of being eco-conscious. Before long it will become habit. This is a great lesson for young kids to learn; they will be able to create their own eco-friendly household one day.
Not only will running an eco-friendly home help the environment and reduce the amount of resources you use, but you’ll also be saving money on your bills. It’s a win-win situation!
