Education is the foundation of good life. We send our children to school because we want them to grow into intelligent young people who have the abilities and background necessary to succeed in the world. Still, for any number of reasons, many children struggle to keep up in the classroom. Consider these top 5 tips for helping your kids through school if they seem to be struggling.

1. Identify the Problem
Understand that there are many things that can cause a child to struggle in school, and the problem is very often not one of intellect. The brightest students in the classroom can still have trouble getting good grades. For some, the problem is that lessons aren’t challenging enough to be engaging. Others have trouble grasping new concepts because of the way they are presented. Still others are so energetic and wide-eyed that they find themselves unable to focus on the subject at hand. Talk to your child’s teacher about what may be going on in class to pinpoint the problem.
2. Get Them Excited About Learning
The number one killer of classroom morale for students is apathy. All too often, kids get bored in school, and their boredom translates into a lack of motivation. They have no desire to learn because there is nothing exciting about learning. Try to help your children get excited about learning by exposing them to interesting subjects, finding real world applications for their classroom lessons, and encouraging educational reading and TV shows in the house. The best way to help your kids in their studies is to make them want to study.
3. Establish Homework Time
Your kids need structure in their early years. This is a time when good study habits can be developed and bad ones can be nipped in the bud. Set aside a dedicated time for completing homework every day–the best times are usually in the afternoon, while the gears are still turning. Getting the kids to finish their homework early will help them work through their assignments while the lessons are still fresh in mind, as well as avoid fostering the nasty habit of procrastination.

4. Introduce a Hobby
It can be very beneficial to learning for children to have interesting and stimulating hobbies outside of school. Kids who are involved in some kind of sporting, creative, or academic pursuit outside of the classroom use their minds more actively throughout the day and often do better in school as a result. Nurture their talents and your kids will be more productive and ambitious, both at home and in the classroom.
5. Find a Qualified Tutor
Very often one of the best things you can do for your child who is struggling in school is to find them a tutor. Online tutoring as well as face to face instruction are widely available from a number of different services and institutions. Talk to your child’s teacher about finding qualified tutors, and also ask for recommendations from other parents. Local libraries and universities can be great resources for finding tutors as well. Find someone who you think will work will with your kids.
