There’s no denying that resort hotels offer many luxuries that few people tend to have in their own homes. Aside from perpetually sunny locales, resort hotels often come complete with a spa/health center, exclusive shopping, and of course, beautifully appointed outdoor areas to lounge or swim. Of course, you might not be too keen to incur the expense of digging a pool, and an above-ground version is more likely to be an eyesore. And you certainly aren’t going to invite vendors into your space. But there are plenty of ways to create the resort feel in your backyard without jumping in the deep end financially. Here are just a few ideas to get you started on the path to creating the luxurious resort experience you crave in the comfort and privacy of your own backyard.

Lush landscaping
Resort hotels are notable for their lush greenery and incredible scenery. But since your view may or may not be worth the trouble to highlight (especially if it’s nothing more than your neighbor’s wall), perhaps you should focus on the landscaping and a feeling of seclusion. You’ll probably want to look into native plants that are easy to tend. A local nursery can help you to find plants that will give you the look you want (tropical, Asian garden, etc.) but still work well for your climate. A variety of plants that flower at different times of year will ensure that you always have color in your outdoor space. And if you don’t want to see the neighbors, consider bamboo, tall bushes, or hedges as an alternative to trees. Just be careful with bamboo; if not properly contained it can spread and choke out other plants.
Fencing
Another way to keep your backyard private is by installing a tall fence. You may have to check in with the county records office (or simply call a surveyor) to ensure that you stay within the property lines, but this is an easy way to screen your space from prying eyes and the materials and design you choose could also help to influence the aesthetic of your space.
Furnishing and lighting
Resort-style furnishings will really help your yard to take on the feeling of opulence that greets you at high-end hotels. So consider installing ample seating, oversized umbrellas, and possibly even a bar. And when it comes to lighting, dim hanging lanterns placed throughout the space will add to the relaxing atmosphere after dark.
Spa amenities
If a pool is out of your price range, simply install a Jacuzzi on the patio so that you can watch stars wheel overhead while you and your guests sip some bubbly. Or build a pergola with light and airy curtains that can be drawn to keep your hot-tubbing private.
Mimic the pros
Whether you are a member of travel or destination clubs, you’ve visited Ritz Carlton Club, or you simply enjoy staying at resort hotels when you leave home, there’s no reason you shouldn’t use your excursion experiences to pinpoint the things you like and incorporate them into your own outdoor space. And don’t neglect the details! Decorative statues, exotic-wood side tables, and fancy barware (glasses, trays, and monogrammed linens) can really add the flair that makes your space feel like an authentic resort.
