(A big “thank you” to our friends at SeaLife Cameras for sponsoring this post!)

It’s already August, which means the summer season is flying by. Your Instagram is living proof of what you’ve ticked off of your summer bucket list. It doesn’t matter if you’ve accomplished a decent amount of your to-do or if you haven’t even started yet, there’s still time to amp up your feed! Here are 7 things to take a picture of before summer’s over:

1. A frozen treat

What better way to cool down in the summer than with a frozen treat? Whether it’s a scoop of ice cream melting between two humongous cookies, a nostalgic popsicle from a passing ice cream truck, or a frozen margarita in a fishbowl glass, these summer treats certainly make for a Grammable moment. Capture your frozen delight with a cityscape background or against a white wall for contrast. Make sure it’s a quick photo so it doesn’t melt too quickly!

2. A sunset

It’s always special when you can catch a sunset. We’re in the dog days of summer right now (these hot, sultry days are based on the heliacal rising of the Sirius star), which means you can find some gorgeous sunsets across the United States. Head to a local waterfront to capture the perfect sunset photo. The best part? No filter required.

3. A boat shot

Nothing says summer like taking a ride on a boat. A cool breeze in your hair, the smell of the salt water, and a drink in your hand. When you’re in the depths of winter reminiscing on warmer days, snapshots from boat photos are the ones you’ll look at longingly.

4. Under the sea

Whether you’re snorkeling in the Caribbean or taking a dive in the pool with your friends, get your hands on a SeaLife Camera and snap an underwater photo. These cameras take clear images of photos you wouldn’t be able to capture otherwise. From colorful coral to your best friend’s cannonball, you’ll be guaranteed triple digit likes with an underwater shot.

5. Candid snapshots of your friends and family

Switch up your feed from photos of your summer self and scenery. Instead, post a candid of your friends and family. Catch them while they’re enjoying summertime fun like fishing or swimming. These photos are more natural and more fun to look back on, capturing memories you may not have even realized were being created.

6. The book you’re reading

Book clubs are extremely popular, especially on social media. Many people have been sharing their summer reads with their friends and followers. Snap a photo of your book cover, then share a short synopsis of the book and why you like it. Use the right hashtags so that other bookworms will see what you’re reading.

7. A scene from nature

Not everyone is close to the coast, but that doesn’t mean there is a lack of scenic summer photos to capture. Whether it’s a park, local lake, mountain range, or flower bed, there’s plenty of natural beauty all around you in the summertime. A photo of one of these landscapes adds vibrant imagery to your feed. With outdoor photos, the right lighting is key to taking your photo to the next level.

Have you thought about a cleaning chart? What I find is the hardest part about keeping a home clean with multiple people is for everyone to do “their part”! In my household of two teenage sons, a 5 year old daughter, a husband and a cat, it always seems like no one wants to take responsibility for cleaning up! I’m sure this is true with college roommates, and anyone else who has to share a living space with other people. Take a look at our home organization ideas on Pinterest here!

How a Cleaning Chart may Keep Your Household Sane

A cleaning chart or roster can be an essential ingredient of a happy household. If you’ve ever lived in a share house, and been forced to put up with a filthy housemate, then you’ve already had a taste of the types of problems that cleaning rosters are intended to solve. They can be great for homes where there are lots of people and lots of cleaning tasks to do, and they also work well for busy people or anyone else who wants to make keeping the house clean a little bit easier. In its simplest form, a cleaning roster is a high level schedule of regular household cleaning tasks.

How To Make Your Cleaning Chart

Start by making a master list of all the cleaning chores that need to be done.  You may want to brainstorm the list first, and then go over the house considering each room to see what you might have missed.

The next step involves organizing these tasks into those that must be done daily, a couple of times per week, weekly, monthly, seasonally, and yearly.  To get you started, here are some examples of tasks that might be in these categories:

Cleaning Chart Daily:

Dishes, cleaning floors and other surfaces, and putting away paperwork;

Cleaning Chart Every few days:

Laundry (depending on how many people are in your household), mopping, and vacuuming;

Weekly:

Vacuuming (if your house doesn’t accumulate much dust), dusting, and general cleaning in areas that don’t get much use;

Monthly:

Ceiling fans and light fixtures, walls, windows, air vents, and deep vacuuming in nooks and crannies;

Cleaning Chart Seasonally:

Outdoor areas, HVAC units, windows, and appliances;

Yearly:

Spring cleaning, and other deep out-of-the-way cleaning that you only do once a year, such as attics and basements.

Note: Don’t just copy the cleaning roster above!  Well, actually you can if you want… but you’ll find it much more beneficial to design one of your own that is tailored to the needs of your household.

Designate Tasks

Next, decide how many people are available to do which cleaning tasks.  Create a rotation so that nobody has to do one particular job every time.  Make sure you take into account what each person can and can’t do.  Some things might be impossible or dangerous for little kids, and you should be careful about assigning too many tasks to family members who work long hours.  Try to get everyone involved in cleaning and remember that kids who do some housework tend to have higher levels of responsibility, maturity, and self-esteem.

Molly Maid has some great cleaning charts for kids, adults, and more, here.

Create Your Chart

The best way to create your cleaning roster is using the computer.  In fact, you can download roster templates from various websites that allow you to shortcut the process a little.  Or, almost equally as easily, you can make your own using a simple program like Microsoft Excel.  Start by recording each of your family member’s work or school schedule, and then start assigning tasks to the available time accordingly.  It might be a good idea to choose times of the day for certain tasks.  For example, general tidying up is a daily task that works well just before bed.

If it’s the first time, you may also want to allow for some flexibility; pay attention to what works well and what doesn’t, and then be prepared to go back and make some changes later.

Need help in creating a cleaning chart? Spending for Less has some great ideas!

Cleaning Chart for the Entire Family:

Perhaps the biggest challenge is getting everyone to follow the cleaning roster!  In order to overcome this difficulty, you may want to post it in a place where it will be easily seen, like the refrigerator.  Also, if you find that it’s tough to get the kids to do their work then it’s worth considering creating a rewards system.  For example, if all of the tasks are completed by the end of the week, then they get a prize or treat. This sort of technique can be quite motivational; you’ll find that rewarding them for doing their cleaning works much better than punishing them for NOT doing it.

If you’re battling against a super messy house and you haven’t tried a cleaning roster before then give it a shot. If you get it right, then it can generate great results.

Halloween Kids’ Games & Craft Ideas

Pumpkin carving

This one is an obvious choice for most Halloween parties. While kids should not be given the knife, they can be a part of pumpkin carving. Adults can remove the top of the pumpkin and children can take out the flesh. Let them design their own frightening pumpkin face using a marker pen and adults can carve the face. Don’t forget to award the spookiest face.

Don’t like to carve pumpkins? Take a look at our no-carving pumpkin ideas here.

Scarecrow or fun ghosts decorations

If you have lots of children coming over for the party, scarecrow building contest can be fun. Make two teams and handover each a bag filled with fake straws, cornstalks, old shoes, jeans, old shirts, patches and straw hats. Each team can designate one person to become a scarecrow. They can use the items in the bag to make their scarecrow. The winning team can be awarded a prize.

Glitter Pumpkins

Spread newspapers on the ground and handover each child a mini pumpkin. Provide them with craft glue, paintbrushes, and glitters in different colors. Let them use the paintbrushes to coat their pumpkins with glue. Finally, ask them to sprinkle the glitter over their pumpkins. After it dries out, they can take their decorative piece back home as a Halloween party memento.

Halloween is certainly one of the most exciting times of the year for kids. So, don’t forget to make it more fun and memorable with these simple and affordable game ideas.

Essential Tips to Throw a Cool Teen Halloween Party

[ad#co-1]

Teen Halloween Party Ideas:

Guest list and invitations

Discuss the guest list with your teen and make sure he/she knows that you are around. Have a backup plan for dealing with uninvited guests, because you are probably going to have a few. When planning invites, be prepared that your teen may not appreciate the idea of Halloween themed paper invitations, so don’t insist. Let him/her choose the communication method for invitations, which most likely would be an email or a text.

Create a Haunted House on a Budget with these cool tips:

Halloween Party Ideas: Privacy Counts!

The last thing teenagers want is parents lurking around. So, give your teen and his/her friends some space and privacy. In order to ensure that things don’t get out of control, it’s wise to stay close by but defiantly in a different room. Peek in occasionally but don’t interfere.

Safe-proof the surroundings

It’s possible to bump into a glass object when lights are dim so, remove expensive and breakable items from the party area. To avoid accidents and longs hours of after party clean ups, consider using plastic or disposable cups and bowls instead of glass.

Halloween Food Ideas

Teenagers love to eat so, provide them with lot of food from chips to pizzas to baked items. Keep an eye on the bowls and plates and fill them as soon as they run empty. Make sure to check with your teen if any of the guests have special dietary needs.

Take a look at our 20 Halloween Party Treat Ideas here.

While, these are some basic tips that you must keep in mind when hosting a Halloween party for teenagers, be sure to include your teen in the planning process for a sure shot hit.

Freshman College Dorm Room Essentials Checklists

College Dorm Room Essentials

As space is at premium at college dorm rooms, resist the urge to carry all your favorite clothes. Few pairs of bottoms, twice the number of tops, a jacket or a sweatshirt and few pairs of shoes should be enough. In order to carry weather appropriate clothes, it’s wise to find out the average climate for each season and pack accordingly. You will also have limited desk and counter space, so make sure to limit items like picture frames and anything else that requires a place to sit. Most likely you will be going back home during the holidays or your parents will pay you a visit, so you will have an opportunity to exchange items for the changing season.

[ad#co-1]

Comfort items

Comfort items make you feel like at home. While it’s advised to carry such items, you must limit them to the ones you use most often. Share the responsibility with your roommate of bringing stuff like television, fridge, dvd player, stereo and more. Before packing any item, think twice if you really need it. For instance, if you can set an alarm on your mobile, perhaps you don’t need an alarm clock.

College Checklist items:

Bedding

Mattress Pad – Twin XL for College Dorm Rooms

Laundry Bag

Shower Caddy

Desk lamp

Flash drive

Headphones can be a great help when studying and writing papers.

Moreover, if possible try getting a look at your dorm room or call the college authorities to find how big the room is and what all comes with it.

Ultimate College Checklist

When preparing for a life’s new journey, it’s highly possible to forget stuff like medications, first aid box, and important documents and papers. If you are planning to take your car along, do remember to carry your driving license, car insurance, and auto registration.

While you should try to create a comfortable living space, unnecessary items will only clutter your room and will eventually lead to a stressful environment. So, instead of trying to replicate your room at home, pack light and smart.

30 Fun Beach Activities for Kids this Summer Vacation

Keep the kids occupied this summer on the beach with these fun activities:

1.) Take beach pictures and build a sandcastle:

Make it a competition between two different sand castles, or give the kids a time limit to finish. Need kids beach toys? WE love this one with a zipper bag.

2.) Oil drilling:

Tell the kids they have five minutes to dig as deep in the sand as they can – the winner is the deepest.

3.) Summer vacation activity: Build a Sandman:

Build a traditional snowman model…using sand. This one works best if you bring a carrot for his nose. Then sit back and watch the double takes. Build a sandman with these cool beach shovel and pail sets.

4.) Sand sculptures:

You can get really creative with these, sculpting turtles, aliens, or anything you want. Decorate with shells and pebbles for added effect. There’s some inspiration here.

5.) Everyone loves body-boarding:

A body or boogie board for a child should be less than £20. Check out this site for tips on how to teach your kid to body-board.
Once they’ve got the hang of body-boarding, you might want to try surfing. There are some good tips about modifying an adult longboard to suit children here.

6.) Beach activities – Try castle battles:

Two teams build a sandcastle each, about 20meterss apart, and place a flag (or towel) on top. Each team has to get the other’s flag. Very simple and a lot of fun.

7.) Play beach games like Sand Bullseye:

Draw three circles in the sand and collect some stones and shells – players have to throw the stones into the circles for points (one for the big outer circle, two for the middle circle and three for the center circle).

8.) Ping pong race at the beach:

Dig a series of sloping channels of equal length and big enough to take a ping pong ball. Put a colored ping pong ball at one end of each channel and race each other blowing the ball down the channel to the finish.

9.) Beach volleyball:

Bring your own net or improvise with windbreakers or picnic baskets.

10.) Nostalgic Beach activities: Cricket or rounders:

Bringing a soft ball and a bat is best for either game, but if you’re playing impromptu you can improvise with what you find on the beach – a piece of driftwood for a bat and a crumpled drinks can for a ball.

11.) Beach activities treasure hunt:

One of the oldest and best – hide objects and coins in the sand for the kids to find. Get a pre-made treasure hunt for kids, here.

12.) Bowls:

Invest in a set of plastic bowls and bring it to the beach with you, or improvise with a few plastic bottles and a tennis ball.

13.) Fill a bucket relay:

Place small plastic beach buckets about ten meters from the water, one bucket for each team. The aim is to be the first to fill the bucket with water from the sea, using only hands to carry it.

14.) Frisbee:

Have one person in the water and another on the sand and toss your favorite frisbee back and forth. We love this glow in the dark frisbee!

15.) Limbo:

Get two people to hold a stick, or tie a ribbon between two trees, and have players go under it as it gets lower and lower. This is great for the beach as the soft sand means no-one’s afraid to fall.

16.) Squirt ball:

Bring water guns and a beach ball to the beach, and draw a line in the sand for each team. Place the beach ball between the two lines. Players have to use the squirted water to get the beach ball over the other team’s line.

17.) Beach Activities: Enjoy the sand with sand memory:

Draw two 4×4 grids in the sand (or smaller for younger children), and get the other team to look away while you place shells on some of the squares in one grid. They have five seconds to look at where the shells are before you cover the grid with a towel, then recreate the pattern on their own grid.

18.) Jewelry making:

Look for shells with holes in them and thread them onto a cord to make a necklace.

19.) Sand art:

Draw pictures in the sand using hands, sticks or shells. You can draw a frame first that each child has to draw their picture inside, or judge the best picture.

20.) Speech pics:

Sit with your back to the players and describe an image in your head or one you have on a piece of paper. Players have to draw their version of it in the sand – the winner is the one whose picture is closest.

21.) Seek and retrieve:

Assign a part of the beach as a boundary, and tell everyone to bring back the most interesting thing they can find within the boundary area. Bonus points for whoever gets back first.

22.) Fly a kite:

If it’s too windy for volleyball, get the kite out and fly it on the beach.

More Beach Activities:

23.) Sharks and minnows:

Get everyone into the water and designate one person as the shark and the rest as minnows. The shark stands in the middle of the group. On ‘go’, the shark has to catch the minnows.

24.) Towel tag:

Dip a towel into the water and roll it up, then tag people by throwing the towel at them. If the towel hits them, they’re ‘it’.

25.) Beach Activities – Try a foot race:

Have a race at the water’s edge, where the sand is wet and harder to run on.

26.) Beach ball bash:

Stand in a circle and hit the beach ball to each other, counting out loud how many times it can be hit without falling. Try and beat the record, or have players shout out something as they hit the ball.

27.) Sand hopscotch:

Draw a hopscotch grid on the sand and use shells as markers.

28.) Beach activities: Moat and bailey:

Build a sandcastle a couple of metres from the water’s edge just before the tide comes in, and get the kids to protect it for as long as possible from the water. They can build a dam of shells, rocks and seaweed, or try a moat for the tide to go into.

29.) Sand Twister:

Draw a Twister board on the sand, using symbols such as crosses, squares etc instead of coloured circles. Assign ‘right foot, square’ and so on.

30.) Collect beach treasures:

See who can find the most interesting beach treasures. From seashells and starfish to beach glass.

Creative Kids Easter Crafts, Activities & Treats

How to Make Origami Kids Easter Bunnies – Video Tutorial

Handprint Easter Cards

If your family absolutely loves sending cards during the holiday season, this is your chance to spread joy during the warmer months – plus it’s ridiculously easy. For this, start with postcard-sized sheets of cardstock. Have your child make a Y-shape with their dominant hand (thumb out and pinky up). Then, have them dip their hand in paint. Let them press the painted hand into place onto the cardboard, being careful not to smudge, and allow it to dry. Once it does, have them draw a face on the circle portion of the “bunny” and write an Easter above or below it. Your family and friends will love this piece of mail.

Easter Bunny Napkin Rings:

Get the kids involved with Easter brunch or dinner by having them make bunny napkin rings. To make these, just cut an empty toilet paper roll in half. Then, apply glue to the outside of the roll and cover it completely in white paper. You can use a paperclip to hold the paper to the roll while the glue sets. Trace two equally sized flower petal shapes on white paper and color the insides pink to stand for the ears. Add glue to bottom of ears and slip between cardboard roll and paper that is wrapped around it. Finally, once everything dries, have the kids draw a face on the bunny with crayons or supply them with googley eyes and pompoms and let their creativity go wild.

Peanut Butter Egg Nest

This is a simple recipe that your mini-me’s will love helping out with. Give them a bowl of thin pretzel sticks and let them break them up into smaller pieces. While they’re working, an adult should bring a ½ cup of sugar, and ½ cup of light corn syrup in a saucepan over medium heat. When the mixture bubbles and the sugar melts, stir in ¾ cup of peanut butter until smooth and pour the mixture over the pretzels. Once the pretzels are cool enough to handle, let the kids help you make the mixture into small balls. Then, make an indentation in the middle of each ball, so each one resembles a bird’s nest. Allow the nests to cool completely and plop a few jellybeans in the middle to represent eggs.

Easter Egg Trivia

Make this years Easter egg hunt a little more educational by turning it into a quiz. When filling the eggs, mix a few trivia questions in with the candy pieces and pocket change. Then, hide them as usual. Let the kids know that if they find the question and answer it correctly, they will be given an extra special prize – the dollar store is great for these. You’ll be surprised how fact they’ll be clamoring to show off what they know!

These Kids’ Easter Activities are a great jumping off point if you’re looking for new ways to entertain the kiddos, but they are certainly not the only options. If you have an activity that your family loves, share it with us in the comments below. We always love to hear from you.

How to give the best grad gifts

To find out what the best grad gifts for someone are, you have to first think about his or hers personality, talents, hobbies and other personal preferences. This is the most important aspect in order to give an exceptional present that will be really valued and won’t be forgotten. For smaller presents or even money, we just love this DIY graduation hat box idea from Martha Stewart.

Giving original graduation presents can be tricky, but if you really try to draw inspiration from the person you want to give it to, you will find that there are many options to choose from. Handmade, creative and person-specific items that last in time are often the best way to go, since they will always be special and matchless. They should however reflect a small part of you as well if possible, because that is what it makes your graduation presents even more special for the one you give it to.
