Christmas Eve Traditions: Start a Few New Ones

Entry #3137, December 23, 2013

What do you have planned for Christmas Eve? Do you have any Christmas Eve traditions that your family has carried on for generations? It’s time to organize some great things to make this holiday evening even more special than it already is. It is the ideal moment to have a good time since we usually spend Christmas Eve with the people we love the most, our family and friends. So, here are some ideas for you to try out and to repeat each and every Christmas so they become a tradition to look forward to.

Christmas Eve Traditions: Start a Few New Ones

Take a Nice Walk

Nothing beats a great walk with good company. On this special night it can be even better to do. Because of the Christmas lights, the night can be even more magical. Look at the houses and talk about the decorations; what everyone liked the most, what was the most unique decoration you saw? If a walk is not possible, take the car to make a tour. You can even make a game out of it and vote for the best decoration.

Tell stories about past Christmas and future ones

Gather up in a comfortable corner of your house and tell Christmas stories about Christmas eves that have past and look at photos of those times if they exist. Also, let your imagination loose and talk about how people might have celebrated Christmas years ago.  It would be fun to talk also about how you think future Christmas celebration may look like. Write all the ideas down to scraps of paper and put them in a jar which will be opened again next Christmas.

Prepare food for Santa and his reindeers

It’s a classic tradition if you have kids in the house. Choose the food you want to offer to Santa and prepare and decorate it together. Don’t forget to put some food out for the reindeers, too. While doing that, listen to Christmassy music, sing along or tell Christmas stories.

Cook together some favorite dishes

Let every family member choose their favorite dish and prepare it all together while having a good time in the kitchen. Don’t make a fuss about table manners; just keep it casual to maximize the fun.

Make crafts or play a special game

Making fun crafts is a great way to spend time on Christmas Eve. Choose easy, fun crafts and decorate your house with it, or wrap it to give it as a present to Santa. Another great idea to spend family time is to play a special game that you play only on this evening each year. Choose a game that promotes communication and fun.
