Welcome back to D.I.Y. Saturday‘s! After the holidays and the start of a new year it is prime time for organizing. What room is the number one place for junk to accumulate? Yes, your garage!! This year I’m starting off the D.I.Y. Saturday’s with the most neglected room in the house, the garage.

Garage organization can be a mystery to many people. Everyone wants it but few really know how to get it. But before you can tame the chaos, you should understand why it’s important to have an organized garage.

1. Finding what you need, when you need it, saves time.

Today we are busier than ever. We rush to work, the grocery store, the kids’ soccer practice. You would think we would make finding things less of a chore. Who has time to spend 20-30 minutes looking for packing tape for a birthday present that should have been shipped out yesterday? Keeping that tape in one place can reduce some of your daily “rush”. Let’s be honest, part of the reason you waited so long to ship that present was because you couldn’t remember where the tape was anyway.

2. Keeping things contained can lower your stress factor.

You take the trash to the garage and as you arrive at the trash can, the broom is leaning against it from the last time someone used it. Now you have to put the trash bag down, move the broom to open the lid, and then throw the trash out. What if the broom had its very own hook and could hang out on the wall until you needed it again? Problem solved. Now, if we could only identify that mysterious someone.

3. Creating a place for bulk storage can save you money.

Grocery items continue to increase in cost. One way to start saving money is purchasing in bulk. Toilet paper and paper towels are typically lower cost per sheet. Buy extra soft drinks when they do go on sale because when you need more, it’s never on sale. Now where to put all of that stuff?  You’ve already maxed out the pantry and the linen closet. Buy a large cabinet for the garage where you can put these items and create a small inventory area.

4. Having the best house on the block makes you proud.

How many times do you pull right up to the closed garage door and open it just long enough to get inside because you are embarrassed by the state of your garage?  Imagine a garage where everything is neat and tidy and you’re proud to leave the door wide open. It doesn’t have to be a dream.
