Entry #1677, October 6 2012
Happy DIY Saturday! Now that October is here, it’s officially time to start thinking about how you will celebrate with Halloween decorations at your home. This week I thought a Halloween tree – similar to a Christmas tree would be perfect, and it’s miniature – perfect for a foyer table.

Fall and Halloween just put me in the home decorating spirit. I am always busy adding garlands of fall leaves around doors, scattering leaves and acorns along the center of a dining table, and my favorite ̶ making and decorating indoor trees. What is an indoor tree and how do you make one? Well, it is quite easy, and these trees are very versatile as you can change their decorations according to each holiday. Take a look at this photo of a Halloween themed tree that was recently featured in Martha Stewart magazine.

Here are some great tips and ideas for making and decorating your own indoor holiday tree:
1. Find the perfect tree
Look through the woods, or your own backyard for the perfect tree branch. You will need a tree branch that has a sturdy stem that is at least 3 feet long (this will be the base or trunk of your tree). You will also want to look for a branch that has lots of side branches and sturdy stems that stretch out from the main stem (these will be the stems you use for hanging ornaments).
2. Spray paint the tree
The next step is to spray paint your tree. Of course, for Halloween a dark, glittery black or pumpkin orange would be a perfect choice. Once your tree is dry, you will need to find a plastic pot that will fit inside your larger decorative urn or pretty garden pot. This smaller plastic pot will be the one you fill with Plaster of Paris to hold your tree and then insert into the larger, prettier display pot.

3. Create a theme for your Halloween tree
Have someone hold your tree upright in the plastic pot as you pour the Plaster of Paris into the pot. Hold the tree steady for a few minutes to ensure the plaster has dried. Then you can insert the plastic pot into your prettier display pot and begin decorating. First, cover the base of the pot with moss, mulch, rocks, or whatever you choose, to hide the plaster mold. A good Halloween themed idea would be to cover the base with fake spider webs and creepy crawly plastic spiders and bugs.
4. Decorate
Then you simply decorate your tree. Use your imagination! Fill your Halloween branches with black crows, or spiders; drape spider webbing from its branches, or wrap small plastic pumpkin lights around the tree. Once your tree is decorated, display it proudly in your front entry for all your guests to view, or put it in a front window for passerby neighbors to enjoy.

Use the tree year around for other holidays!
Here is the great thing about this tree: Once Halloween is over, you can begin changing your tree into a harvest-themed Thanksgiving tree, and then a Christmas tree, and then a Valentine’s Day tree, and then an Easter tree…..you get the idea? It is useful year-round! Don’t be scared to change the paint color, as well. Simply pull out the plastic base pot and spray paint your tree whatever color suits your current theme – maybe a glittery white for Christmas, and then insert it back into your decorative pot, hide the base with fake snow and begin decorating for Christmas.
These trees are so versatile; you may never actually have to put it away in storage as there is always an upcoming season and or reason to decorate. You could even use it for birthday celebrations!
