Happy DIY Saturday! Now that we are fully into March it is time for many of you to take a look at your outdoor home and lawn. Whether your lawn is big or small, and several other factors you may need help deciphering how to choose the right lawnmower. Your lawn’s health, look and feel can largely be improved by choosing the right lawnmower as well as choosing one for your individual lifestyle.

Today, watch two You Tube videos for choosing a Petrol ( or gas & oil) lawnmower or an electric variety. Then my guest blogger gives tips for choosing the right riding lawnmower. Depending on your budget, how much lawn you have to mow, your ability to push a mower, and several other factors will help you choose the right lawnmower this spring.

After all, the time to lounge in the grass will be here any day now, get ready with a lawnmower that shows off your lawn’s best assets.

Guest Blogger – How to Choose a Riding Lawnmower

If you have a large yard, chances are you will need a riding lawn mower. Rather than pushing a mower for hours, you could sit comfortably and get the job done much more efficiently with a riding mower. A riding mower is not only more powerful than a push mower, it also has a considerably larger mowing deck (meaning, a larger blade surface) allowing you to cover ground much more quickly.

Types of riding mowers

Before setting off to find John Deere riding mowers, it’s important that you know the difference between a zero-turn mower and a lawn tractor or gardening tractor. It’s worth your while to check out the two options before making a final decision to buy.

A lawn tractor is fairly inexpensive for a riding mower, ranging between $1,000 and $3,000. These are very popular because of their versatility. The lawn tractor is not only a riding mower, but it can be used for all your ground-engaging tasks. The tractor can be hooked up to a variety of attachments like snow plows, tillers, or box scrapers, making it a very versatile tool for the avid gardener.

A zero-turn mower is made for efficiency and is able to cut grass very quickly and easily. They are able to move at a much faster speed than lawn tractors and can practically turn on a dime, making them very useful for maneuvering tight spaces and around objects. A zero-turn mower has its mowing deck in the front, and the engine in the back, providing greater visibility as well.

The main drawback is that zero-turn mowers tend to be a bit pricier (between $3,000 and $5,000), making them more popular with lawn-care companies than home owners.

Gas or Electric?

An electric riding mower is an excellent environmentally-conscious alternative to traditional gas mowers. An electric mower is cleaner, quieter, and better for the environment – not to mention, cheaper to run. Maintenance on an electric riding mower is minimal; you simply have to keep the battery charged and the blade sharp, and it’s ready to go.

The drawback to an electric riding mower is that it lacks the power of a gas powered motor, making them much less efficient. The battery-life is fairly limiting and they tend to die out quickly, especially in wet weather. If your yard isn’t too large, however, an electric riding mower is an excellent option, providing the comfort of a riding mower while keeping the environment cleaner.

Mower add-ons

There are all kinds of attachments that you can use with your mower to enhance its performance and make your job easier.

A grass catcher attachment eliminates all the work of raking and bagging clippings as all the cut grass is deposited in the catcher. Once you’re done mowing, just empty the receptacle.

A mulching kit can be added to mulch clippings and return them to the lawn. This eliminates pickup and provides an environmentally friendly fertilizer for your lawn composed of finely shredded grass clippings.

It’s good to be aware, however, that add-ons can significantly raise the price of your mower. Of course, you don’t often need many attachments. Figuring out your specific needs will help keep the final cost down when it comes time to buy.
