The bedroom is the most important room for anyone. Whether it’s a box room or a huge chamber of opulence, one thing’s for certain: you’ll spend a lot of time in there, even if it’s just for 40 winks. Still, it’s no use if you don’t feel comfortable or special in that space – after all, it’s your own personal area, and it’s extremely important that you do something nice with it; it’s a reflection on everything about you.
So, here are a few things to consider if you’re going for a true contemporary look. Below, some tips are big, some small, and some concern things you would probably overlook otherwise.
The bed is central to room design – and your comfort
A lot of people make big decisions on their beds, though they often find that the style of bed they choose is either incompatible with their design plans in either the short or long term, or they simply don’t like their bed after a few nights. As such, get something flexible in design but contemporary. Wooden beds are always a safe bet- particularly those of the plinth style, which maintain that minimalist-like look.
Keep profiles low
The best way to achieve the contemporary look reflects the last point; getting lower-profile designs, such as a plinth-style bed and low-lying storage, is perfect. It frees up wall space, too, though it’s best to keep walls covered in art – not shelves.
Don’t go overboard with feminine overtones
If you’re a lady that wants to show off your feminine side in the bedroom, don’t go over the top; colours should be kept to pastels at most, as the more extravagant shades of pink and purple can make a contemporary bedroom more of an eyesore than an individual masterpiece. That said…
Don’t be scared to use dramatic colour schemes
While it may sound like cognitive dissonance in action, this tip complements the previous one. If you like brighter or more in-your-face colours, use one – or a maximum of two – as accents around a room alongside more dependable and comforting colours. Given the next point, it may be best to stick to varying shades of greys, browns, blacks and whites if you’re going to inject some really eye-opening hues.
Wood is good
Finally, wooden accents – or just wood in general – will always work in a contemporary bedroom. Whether you’re just matching an oak or beech undercurrent in your room, or you’re going all-out-attack with coving and a wall fascia, remember that wood doesn’t go out of fashion if you do it properly, so avoid those 70s and 80s undertones.
