Guest Blogger: Avoid these Common Kitchen Design Mistakes

 Guest Blogger #882, Entry #2076, March 5, 2013

Designing a kitchen can be an enjoyable and fun endeavor especially when the whole family is involved. Everyone gets a chance to pitch in ideas and incorporate suggestions that make the whole project a collaborative effort that makes everyone closer. However, there are basic rules that need to be applied in home design, which should come first before the aesthetics.

Below are some of the no-nos in kitchen design:

Creating an Inefficient Kitchen Layout

With today’s endless choices in design, colors, texture and style, you can play around with almost anything. But while this is applicable to walls, cabinets, flooring, countertops and backsplashes, the one thing you cannot mess around with is the kitchen triangle layout.

The ideal layout is that the three high-traffic areas involving the refrigerator, sink, and stove should be in close proximity with each other, with no obstructions in access to and from each one. Such concept was established to bring more efficiency to any kitchen. Make sure that there is plenty of room to walk around in, but not too great of a distance that you need ten strides to reach each area.

Designing without Measuring

I am no design guru but it doesn’t take an expert to know that this is one design flaw resulting in a mistake in measurements, or lack thereof. There should be enough space for countertops to be functional, otherwise, it might just look like a displaced stool. Having watched too many home makeover shows, you might have been mislead into thinking that DIY is easy-breezy and all that, causing you to ditch the boring task of measuring. But note that even great designers measure, and so should you! They say that designing a kitchen is like a putting together a jigsaw puzzle. To have a functional space, you need to be mindful of the different shapes and sizes of each component fitting together. Such is key to having a great design and needs to be taken rather seriously.

Not Installing Enough Kitchen Cabinets

Storage is important in every room, but in the kitchen ,it’s royalty. It is a prime investment that not only increases the equity of your property but also takes care of keeping appliances, utensils, and other eyesores concealed, making your kitchen appear less cluttered. They also prevent insects and other crawly creepers from getting in contact with your food. Kitchen cabinet kings is a great place to find kitchen cabinets for cheap. Besides having a wide selection, they are known to provide great customer service. See their cheap kitchen cabinets offered online and get items shipped free too for orders $3000 and up. You can never have too many cabinets since there will always be a new appliance, a new set of china and more groceries to fill any kitchen cupboard. Imagine not having enough storage around and you had to go to the garage just to get dishes…tiring and very inconvenient. Having access to all pots and pans, kitchen gadgets and utensils can make cooking and food preparation more enjoyable.
