Guest Blogger: How to Choose the Right Autumn & Winter Bedding

Guest Blogger #742, Entry #1739, October 20, 2012

As the weather begins to get colder, you may want to switch up your bedding. On bitter autumn and winter nights, there is nothing better than wrapping up in a warm and snug duvet. However, finding the right bedding can sometimes prove to be a challenge. Here are some tips to help you find a duvet that will keep you comfortable and cosy during those cold nights.

Natural Pillows

Choose the perfect bedding, like natural pillows

What’s your tog?

If you prefer synthetic bedding, you will need a duvet with a higher tog rating. A tog is the measure of warmth a duvet provides – so in autumn and winter, always go for a rating between 10.5 and 13.5.

When deciding which tog is best, you should take the temperature of your room into consideration. If you have a well-insulated house, a duvet with a 10.5 tog is probably best. However, if your home is slightly cooler, then a 13.5 tog rating will keep warm when it’s cold outside.

Choosing a warm duvet: synthetic or natural?

Whether you prefer natural and synthetic duvets, both can provide exceptional warmth in the colder seasons.

If you want light, breathable yet warm bedding, a duck or goose down duvet is often a popular choice because of its natural thermal properties. This is also an excellent transitional duvet as the down can trap in warm air during colder nights, and remain light during hotter seasons.

If you have allergies, there is no need to fret as you can also find light synthetic duvets that will keep you comfortable on cold nights. A duvet with a super fine microfibre blend and a higher tog rating is the best option as the filling acts in a similar fashion to natural down, retaining warm air so you aren’t interrupted by extreme temperatures.

For those who prefer a heavier filled duvet, a feather and down duvet is probably best. The denser interior provides a truly tucked-in feel, cocooning you in a layer of warmth. A synthetic duvet with a cotton cover will also be heavier due to the thickness of the fabric.

Now that you know all the bedding options, go and invest in a winter duvet that helps you to achieve the best night’s sleep even on bitterly cold nights.
