Kitchen Organization: How to Add a Multifunctional Island

Haven’t you sometimes secretly wished for a genie with many hands to help with your kitchen organization? Well that can’t be promised but what can be, is an introduction to the world of multi-utility and multi-functionality. I’m sure you couldn’t agree with me more, if I said that there is no better place to begin than ones own kitchen. A kitchen is the heart of ones house and a well functioning kitchen ensures the heart functions just fine. An important component of the kitchen that often remains under utilized is a kitchen island. Often if not always, kitchen islands tend to become solid masses occupying a lot of space without being as functional as expected, considering the amount of space they occupy. Today, lets reflect on how we can turn our lifeless kitchen islands into Multifunctional Islands, a genie of sorts!

Think of the Lifestyle of your Family

A little research and homework on your part, as to how you see your kitchen island functioning in future, would be the best way to start. Think of the activities you want the island to perform. Whether you want to use it for cooking, food preparation, eating etc or do you want it to be the activity hub of  your home?  Do you see your children doing their craft projects here? Is this where you will entertain close friends? Giving this a little thought will have you utilize your space in a much better and a planned way. Kitchen organization should be thought about when planning a remodeling job and how the lifestyle of your family will use it.

Bringing A Few Ideas Your Way…

A Partition, Storage & Of Course An Island

A kitchen island need not be the usual flat platform. You could do many interesting things with it. For one, you could add another dimension to your open kitchen by adding a physical partition without blocking the visual connectivity. Have a look at the image below. See how the kitchen organization is improved with an aesthetic flair?

A Truly Multifunctional Island

The island has been turned into a partition very cleverly and takes in a lot of storage. So basically, a lot of your display crockery, books and items of regular use can be neatly tucked in this ‘see through partition wall’. The result is a fine segregation of space without visually breaking it up into smaller chunks.

Kitchen Organization – Storage with Bookshelves

There could be times when you decide not to use the kitchen island for eating. In cases like these, the space below the table top can be used very creatively. You could incorporate some bookshelves or make niches to display some gorgeous pottery. Storage cabinets and drawers won’t hurt either.

Wine Storage in your Kitchen Island

Your kitchen island can be turned into the most stunning wine storage unit. You could easily install a mini wine cooler under the countertop or just create a mini cellar storage there. So that way you will have a complete wine bar beneath the island and save on that space elsewhere.

A Transition Space

There are situations when an odd column pops up its ugly head and you despair over the loss of an island space. Fret not! These columns can be beautifully turned into exceptional dividers and partitions that can hold niches, elegant artwork, big LCD’s and what not. Thanks to these columns, what you get is a winsome transition space.

A Level Change

It might be hard to imagine but a kitchen island can become a nice way to induce a level change in to your design scheme. Often we desire for a change of level between our kitchen and living areas and find ourselves in a tricky situation. Believe me a kitchen island can put your woes to an end. Just have a look at the picture below and say buh bye to your woes.

These ideas will help to create a kitchen island that will let you organize your kitchen better and designate a multifunctional agenda to the lonesome kitchen island. Not only will you be able to enhance the look and feel of your space but will also be able to enhance the quality of space usage. It would be great to hear from you about your thoughts on how a kitchen island can come to a better use. Do feel free to drop in your comments, suggestions and ideas. We look forward to your tips and ideas!
