Have you ever wondered how your office desk can start off being the most organized location and 6 years later you only have enough space for your computer to fit? Well sadly that has been my home office desk story for the last few years of Starting Stagetecture. When I first started I had just a roll around printer desk with my “Carrie Bradshaw – Sex in the City” iconic black Apple laptop that was as slow as molasses! You couldn’t tell me anything, because I was excited to be starting my own business and nothing could stop me.

I’m remembering back to when I attended the Haven Conference in Atlanta, Georgia in 2015, and saw one of the sponsors was Minted – “A New Kind of Print Shop Built Around Artists”. I was given a complimentary print and the chance to refresh my home office and I thought in my head, “YES!!! Finally an excuse to declutter my home office.”

Choosing my Minted – Limited Edition Artworks

I was excited to see that Minted is based around artists and you can read about each artist, their philosophy to their designs, and then choose which one fits your decorative style and space you’re going to display it.

Breathing Life Back into My Home Office

When organizing your office, especially when you live at home, you’ll need to part with items that don’t really need to be kept anymore. For me – catalogs, home decor magazines from 2009, every craft that my daughter has made since she was 2…. you know STUFF!  After 4 hours of purging, sorting, dusting, and organizing I was able to shed the pounds from my overly bloated office and showcase my new Minted artwork in my office.

I especially love the colors of Sundrop that “…takes inspiration from the radial patterns of a puddle with drops of new water, this painting is lively and happy.” The colors compliment my sage green walls in my office beautifully and I chose the distressed charcoal stain frame from Minted to compliment my desktop.

Home Decor: How to Creatively Mix and Match Metal Finishes

Wrong. It is a common misconception that every metal in your kitchen should look identical. In fact, kitchen styles that mix metals are incredibly chic because by breaking supposed design rules, they look distinctive and fascinating. It is entirely possible to mix bronze and nickel, stainless steel and copper in a tasteful and attractive way – so you can keep those beautiful bronze drawer pulls and use different metal finishes elsewhere in your kitchen as long as you follow this guide to smart metal mixing. Choose Dominant Metal Finishes

Just as you must always choose a dominant color for a space, you must choose a dominant metal for your kitchen, as well as no more than two metal accents. Typically, the dominant metal will be that which is most prominent in the room, like the stainless-steel appliances or the oil-brushed bronze faucets; no matter where you look, you should catch a glimpse of your dominant choice. The metals you mix in should complement and supplement your main metal, either offering balance in tone or texture or carrying the motif further.

For example, if your kitchen is to be largely white and gold, you might add a gleaming silver chandelier for metallic equilibrium. Alternatively, if you have brushed nickel and stainless steel, you can match Italian pewter dinnerware to the cool, textured theme.

Select Your Metals Color Scheme

Metals are essentially colors, just with a bit more sparkle and shine. Therefore, before you make firm decisions on your kitchen’s metal finishes, you should have a solid plan for the room’s color scheme. Generally, warm metals (like gold, copper, and brass) go with warm colors, while cool metals (chrome and silver) go with cool colors. Meanwhile, in neutral-colored rooms, you should feel free to go wild with your metallic mixing and matching. You can even use metals to add more texture and temperature to a room, perhaps placing a copper lamp in a gray space or a nickel-framed mirror in a beige one.

One way to intelligently mix and match metals in your kitchen is by varying the color of your cabinets. For example, white cabinets in a kitchen island can boast oil-brushed bronze fixtures while black wall cabinets use brushed-nickel knobs and pulls. You can manipulate the colors around your metals to make them flow with the rest of the room.

Mix Warm and Cold Metals

If you thought it was a sin to mix and match metals in your kitchen, you probably believe mixing warm and cold metals is akin to blasphemy. In truth, using just one metal in a space is monochromatic and boring, and using a single metal temperature in a large kitchen is equally dull. Instead of worrying about precise matching, you should be thinking about interior design in terms of harmonizing – different tones working together to make beautiful music. If your space is large enough, and your color scheme permits it, you should seriously consider integrating warm and cold metals in your kitchen.

Remember to Use Textural Metal Finishes

Unlike flat color, metals tend to add a variety of textures to your space. For example, nickel and bronze hardware tend to have a matte, brushed grain, whereas gold and chrome are glossy and spotless – unless you forget to polish them. While you are surveying different metal finishes for your kitchen, you should keep in mind your texture options to create a rich atmosphere for the eye and fingertips.

Add Neutral Metal Finishes and Tones

In this post, we’ve written much about opposing types of metal finishes and when to use them, but there is one underused metal that serves as a neutral in almost every space: Iron. Iron is neither warm nor cool, and it comes it a variety of textures to suit any kitchen style. If you feel uncertain about mixing and matching more assertive metals, you should feel confident adding iron to any room because iron doesn’t clash with any metal. In fact, iron only serves to make other metals pop, giving them more color and temperature by contrast. Iron remains the hardest working metal – at least for decorators.

Hardwood flooring hates water!

The number one fact you must bear in mind is that hardwood flooring hates water. To keep your flooring in tip-top condition, it’s crucial that you avoid wetting your floor wherever possible. If spills happen, be sure to mop them up quickly using a mop or a dry cloth to prevent damage. As tempting as it may be to run your mop over your wood floor, it’s much better to clean your floor with a dry mop to avoid soaking it through. Excessive moisture can cause the planks of your floor to rise, bow, or break, and can cause permanent discolouration. Do not use scouring pads or steel wool pads to lift stubborn stains as these will undoubtedly scratch the surface of your wood. Vacuuming wood floors is usually fine, but be sure to keep an eye out for signs that vacuuming is damaging the floor.

As well as avoiding water, it’s also a good idea to avoid any hardwood flooring cleaning products that aren’t specifically designed for wood floors. Ordinary cleaners contain harsh chemicals that can easily strip a floor of its glossy coating and cause irreversible staining, discoloration, and damage. Cleaners that include acrylics, urethane polish or acids are an instant no-no.

Keep your Pets’ Claws Clipped on your Hardwood Flooring:

If you have pets, be sure to keep their nails constantly trimmed to protect your floor from scratches. Although durable, wood floor is notoriously easy to scratch. Sadly, not all scratches can be buffed out, so save yourself the trouble and keep pets’ claws neat. If your cat or dog regularly walks over your wood floor and lies in a particular spot, a good idea might be to invest in a rug; not only will it protect your floor, it’ll give your pet an extra layer of comfort. In a similar vein, walking over a wooden floor in shoes is also a very bad idea; stones and other small items can lodge into the cracks of soles and cause irreparable damage.

Watch your Furniture on Refinished Hardwood Floors:

One of the number one causes of damage to wood flooring is caused by furniture scraping over the floor. Furniture that’s left in one place for a long time (such as sofas) can cause damage to the floor beneath it, particularly if it’s heavy. Help to avoid damage by investing in floor protectors and gluing them to the underside of table and chair legs.

Hardwood Flooring around Kids:

Hardwood floors are often advertised as being highly family-friendly and significantly more durable than carpets. Parents of young children often prefer wood floors to carpets because spills can be cleaned quickly and easily and there’s no threat of staining. The reality, however, is slightly different; as mentioned above, spills can be a recipe for disaster, especially if they’re not cleaned properly, and wood floors can be stained by a variety of products. Toys dropped on to the floor can also cause permanent dents.

Let one of your wallpaper DIY projects this weekend be installing wallpaper on your ceiling. The completed masterpiece will draw eyes upward. Other than that, a wallpapered ceiling completes a room and becomes the focal point. Such ceilings are perfect for babies or people on bed rest because they spend a lot of time lying down. Neutral wallpaper is timeless and blends easily into any room. In an entryway ceiling, wallpaper produces a feeling of increased space or coziness, depending on the design.

Are you getting tired of your kitchen cabinets or bookshelves looking boring? Wallpaper automatically transforms your plain and boring shelves, cabinets, and drawers into works of art. It can be used to line the inside and outside of shelves and cabinets. You can wallpaper the sides and back then paint the outside for a stunning finish. On drawers, wallpaper can be applied to the front or sides, becoming visible whenever they are pulled.

Alternating designs, types, and colors of wallpaper can help you to come up with unique styles. If you are a DIY enthusiast, you can install temporary wallpaper and change it anytime you are in the mood for a DIY project. Browse through numerous wallpaper ideas to select what works for you. The designs at your disposal are as numerous as the wallpaper types.

3. Furniture Pieces Never Grow Old

Use innovative wallpaper ideas to convert old furniture pieces into classy designs. The internet is full of home decor ideas that inspire you to remodel furniture with wallpaper ideas. You can wallpaper the back or interior of your bookcase to make it more appealing. The sides and front can then be painted a matching or contrasting color for added interest.

Wallpaper can also be applied on wooden chairs. Vinyl or vinyl-coated wallpaper is durable and easy to apply and is perfect for such projects. Create a Home Decor Design Theme

A trick that almost every professional interior designer uses is coming up with a theme at the beginning of the process. The theme helps provide direction and creates cohesion throughout the home so each room flows from one to the next.

If you’re having trouble choosing a home decor design theme turn to the Internet for inspiration. Start a Pinterest board where you can save images of designs you like. After you’ve added a couple dozen images to your design board, look for common themes that they share to find the one that’s right for your home.

Choose Color Palettes that Resonate With your Room Decor

Color is one of the most important design choices you’re going to make. When you’re choosing to be your own interior designer it’s best to come up with color palettes before you start getting into the fine details since hues can influence other design decisions.

• Primary color– This is the main color that’s used in a room, often for the paint and furnishings.
• Secondary color– The secondary color plays off of the primary color to bring out the richness in both. It can either be analogous (within the same color family) or complimentary (a hue from the opposite side of the color wheel).
• Accent color– An accent color is used sparsely to help the other colors pop. That’s why accent colors are usually vibrant or bright.

AN INTERIOR DESIGNER CONSIDERS MATERIALS BEFORE MAKING A SELECTION

The materials that are used are going to impact everything from the textural sensations to longevity. For example, wooden blinds may cost a little more upfront, but they last longer than cheap plastics and add a rich warmth to your room. They can also be customized with various finishes, color matched with existing trim and sized to fit your windows perfectly.

Other spots where material quality really matters are the flooring and furniture. Both of these are unique in that people come in contact with floors and furniture on a daily basis.

INTERIOR DESIGN MUST BE FUNCTIONAL IN NATURE:

Functionality can never be compromised for style. No matter how fabulous a room looks if the design impedes functionality you’ll keep running into problems. One way to ensure functionality is a top priority is to consider your day-to-day lifestyle. For instance, a family with three young children is going to have dramatically different functional needs compared to a retired couple.

THINK LIKE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER WHEN CHOOSING ARTWORK:

Choosing the right artwork is about more than personal preference. Art is extremely personal since it’s interpreted differently by each person. However, that doesn’t mean any piece of art will work in every space.

For one, a piece of art can be the focal point of a room. If the other design elements don’t play off of the artwork it can cause everything to clash.The artwork should also match the theme you’ve selected for your interior design. Always go with artwork that speaks to you, but just make sure it’s not competing with everything else around it.

BALANCE OUT LARGE FURNITURE

There are interior designer ways to decorate with large furniture. An oversized couch or four-poster bed can easily dominate a room, particularly if it isn’t placed properly for the room. Other furniture and design elements will have to be on the same scale in order to balance out big pieces. But be careful – all it takes is a few similarly sized pieces to create balance without cluttering the room.

USE A MIX OF DIFFERENT TEXTURES IN YOUR HOME DECOR

You wouldn’t use the same color for every design element, and the same holds true for texture. If you do use a monochromatic or neutral color scheme, using a mix of textures is even more important.

The texture of the walls, flooring, furniture and other items in the room impacts the visual appearance and textile experience.The texture can be smooth and hard or soft and comfy. Some materials are rough and rugged while others are supple and delicate looking. Texture is pleasing to the touch and the eye, so don’t overlook it when you’re making interior design choices.

AN INTERIOR DESIGNER LIKES TO SPRINKLE IN PERSONAL TOUCHES

To make a house really feel like a home instead of a showroom, you’ll need to incorporate at least a few personal touches. A few family portraits on the mantle or decorative pieces you picked up on a vacation is all it takes to add personality without overwhelming the design theme.

Home Organization – Get Rid of Holiday Clutter

Over the holidays, your family gets a lot of presents – food gifts, toys, tech gadgets, and even clothes. Tell everyone in your home to get a garbage bag and put in all the items they don’t need. You can donate them to a local charity or a donation site.

If you have lots of Christmas decorations, decide whether you want to keep them all. Sort them and give the ones you don’t want to Goodwill or your local thrift shop. Store useful decorations in clear plastic containers for easy access. You can use plastic tubs as they hold more items.

Cleaning Tips: Renew your Dining Table & Furniture

Heavy entertaining can take its toll on your dining table. After the holiday parties, your beautiful table may be covered in smudges, nicks, dirt, and a lot more. The harsh winter weather can also wreak havoc on it, leaving it looking dull. Dust, shine, and recondition your dining table with a gentle detergent. Choose one that protects wood from wear and tear and use it to clean your other wood furnishings.

Odor Eliminator: Get Rid of Unwanted Smells

While rearranging your home might be your first priority, holiday smells can linger long after you’ve cleaned. Your house can smell of visitors’ perfumes and pungent holiday dishes. To ensure you get rid of these smells, use a deodorizer or a natural scent like cinnamon. You can also light scented candles. How to Beautify your Home with Garden Decor

Intimate Gathering Space

Just create a cozy, nice space to have your morning tea or evening coffee and enhance the beauty of your garden in the process. Prepare the ready-for-entertaining spot by surrounding a table with a couple of rattan armchairs, a fire pit, and one or two freestanding umbrellas. If you want to enjoy some quality time with your loved one, just keep a small, bright-colored table with two chairs. Decorate the table with two tiny potted plants and you’ll have a small retreat with lovely natural scenario around.

If you want to add a touch of fun by adding tropical punch to the seating area, Real Simple has a lovely idea.

Colorful Vertical Garden

Whether you already have a garden blooming with colorful flowers or lovely seasonal produce or not, adding up a vertical garden along the fence will further add up to the curb appeal. Spray paint some cans with bright colors, plant flowers in them, and attach them to the fence. Choose bright colors as the pot paint, which will create a stunning consonance with the red, blue, or yellow flowers in the pots.
