Summer is definitely here, and now that you’ve thrown wide the shutters, let in the sunlight and fresh air, and completed your spring cleaning, you’ve probably found a few home remodeling projects that you’d like to tackle before the cooler breezes of fall set in (and they will arrive all too soon). You might want to paint the entire house (inside and out), fix that leak that sprung up over the winter, or repair the shutters that took a beating during the blizzard season. Or perhaps you’ve got it in your head to tear out your kitchen and completely remodel it to add some modern flair to your home and see a major return on investment down the road. But whatever plans you’ve got in regards to home upgrades this summer, it behooves you practice safety first when it comes to your remodeling projects. So here are just a few tips you may want to observe.

Plan ahead for safety
When it comes to safety during home remodeling projects, you’ll need to plan ahead. Depending on the type of project you’re undertaking, your safety measures may require some forethought. For example, suppose you’re painting your home. You will probably want at least some basic safety equipment, such as goggles and a mask. But you might also want to consider the materials you’re using. The reason for wearing a mask is to stop yourself from inhaling the harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that are found in paint. But you can take these toxins out of the equation altogether by purchasing non-VOC paint products, and there are many options on the market today.
Of course, you might also want to arrange for a spotter if you’re going to be shimmying up and down a rickety ladder all day. The point is that seeing to safety concerns will likely require some planning on your part, and you may need to secure specific equipment, safety gear, and even a helper to ensure that you don’t get hurt during the remodeling process.
Ensure you have safe working conditions
However, you will also need to behave in a safe and responsible manner on the job (so to speak). Your safety gear won’t do you any good if you fail to utilize it during your project. But you should also take your time. You might get excited about your upgrades and be tempted to rush through the process, but patience is a virtue that you should definitely practice during projects large and small. You should begin by consulting a home repair or remodeling guidebook, even if you’ve taken on similar projects in the past. Most of these guides come complete with safety tips that could just save your life.

For example, suppose you are replacing a lighting fixture. You might think that putting the light switch in the off position is enough to keep you from getting electrocuted. But the wires are live until you actually flip the breaker switch to cut electricity to that portion of the house. A guidebook will remind you of this cardinal rule of working with electrical systems. DIY home remodeling projects can definitely save you money, but not if you end up with medical bills in the process. So plan ahead to ensure that you have all the gear you’ll need to be safe, and always behave in a responsible manner during your projects.
