Guest Blogger: How to Choose the Perfect Blinds for your Child’s Room

 Guest Blog #220, Entry #715, October 21, 2011

A lot of parents put every effort in to make a child’s room a perfect environment for their loved ones. You would want it to be interesting and stimulating and more importantly, as safe as possible. You also don’t want a room which is going to be hard to clean! When helping my cousin and his wife with their son’s room, I actually found that one of the hardest aspects of a room to choose was the window treatments!

Safety:

As I have already said, for a parent, safety is paramount for their child. People forget that window treatments could actually be a danger to a child, with pull cords which they could get tangled in or trip over. Short cords that are no more than three inches would be best when choosing blinds. Both roller blinds and roman blind are a good choice for this. Roller blinds are generally a little cheaper, so they may be the best option. Curtains are also another good option; this is mainly because they don’t have the hazards of cords. Whatever treatment you do choose, it is vital to ensure they are installed correctly so that there is no risk of them falling off.

Lighting:

One factor which may affect your child is street and car lights, especially if you live in the city. One way to tackle this is to choose darker curtains or blinds which use fabric that block more light out of the room. If you live in a more rural area, more light in the room may be more beneficial to you.  It might even help wake your children up in the morning for school! It is thought that natural light could actually improve someone’s mood as well as being good for your health, so this could be taken into consideration. Blind and curtains that are translucent can help cool down a room as well as giving a warm diffuse light. If you didn’t want this effect all the time, some suppliers offer duel roller blinds so you can change it for night or day, or depending on the weather.

Patterns and Designs:

Hopefully giving your child a fun, stimulating environment will inspire them to be playful and not just sit on the latest computer game. One way of helping to stimulate them would be with patterns and designs. Roller blinds are a good choice for this as they are easily customized and they have a huge range of premade designs. In the case of my cousin’s room, we tried to select a design that was suitable for him now, as well as something which he would still like when he got a bit older. This is something which you might have to take into consideration, making sure the blinds will be appropriate for your child for a long time.

This is a guest post by Michael Turner, interior design enthusiast and UK blogger who is currently doing research on behalf of a wooden blinds supplier.

The blind idea is genius! I have something similar, but I’m constantly having to move stuff and I usually put a white sheet up that ends up having wrinkles. Thanks for sharing! Outdoor roller blind
