If you’re thinking about doing an overhaul on your child’s bedroom, you may not be too keen to adopt the prevailing philosophy that boys love everything blue and that they’re only interests are sports, vehicles, and war, or that girls have a proclivity for pink and that ballet and dolls are the only thing they want in their personal space. In fact, you may have far loftier aspirations for your children, including a love of the arts. So if you want to do something a little different and ultimately more beneficial for your child’s development, why not consider creating a room that centers on the theme of music? Here are just a few things you’ll probably want to include.

Instruments
Whether they’re ready to play or they’re hanging on the wall as décor, musical instruments are a must in a music-themed bedroom. If your child is interested in music you could provide a plethora of instruments for him to noodle around on, from strings and woodwinds to drums or even something simple like a tambourine. Eventually he’ll probably gravitate towards one or two of the instruments provided, but this exposure to possible options is a good way to let him explore his musical tastes.

Recording equipment
An awful lot of musicians start out recording demos in their basement and shipping them off to agents and producers. So reward your child’s enthusiasm for music by installing some recording equipment in his music-themed room. You’ll need a mic, a mixing board, and a computer with some editing software installed, as well as a disc burner so that he can make copies to give to friends, family, and eventually, record execs (fingers crossed).
Acoustic panels
You may not want to cover your child’s walls with egg crates or other materials that are obviously for sound-proofing purposes. But if he’s really into creating music, laying down tracks, and sound-editing on a computer, it behooves you to create an environment that dampens outside noises. Luckily, you can add this feature with flare if you choose decorative acoustic panels (such as Soft Sound), which are made for the average interior space (rather than a professional recording studio). These panels come in a variety of sizes and shapes, and you can choose from a selection of colored fabrics to cover them in order to create a custom look in your child’s room.

Artistic installations
While signed guitars and framed platinum records look pretty cool on the wall, you could get a lot more creative with the décor. Think about papering the walls with a sheet-music motif (or framing music that your child has written), making a mobile out of 7-inch LPs, purchasing music-themed linens (sheets, curtains, pillows, etc.), or even installing an antique jukebox.
Sound system
While younger kids might not appreciate a stack of Marshall amps to go with their electric guitar, it doesn’t take a masters degree in music education to know that teenagers will go nuts for a truly comprehensive setup that includes a tuner, a mixing board, and speakers. Whether they use it to play their own music or appreciate the latest sounds on the airwaves, no music-themed room would be complete without a sound system for kids to play their favorite tunes.
