Organization is right up there with dieting and weight loss in the New Year’s resolutions department. They’re a lot alike, really as they both require motivation for success.
Our psyches need a reason to carry through on our good intentions; if you don’t have one, your motivation will wane and you will struggle to succeed. But if you are motivated, then watch out world! A motivated person is a person who gets where they want to go.
Organization is essential to a life that is:
- less stressful,
- more efficient,
- less hurried, and
- more fun.
And if that isn’t motivation enough to get organized, then nothing is!
Getting organized isn’t difficult.
All it takes is the right attitude and a bit of time and effort. So if you want to bring organization into your life, following these tips will surely help.
Slow and steady wins the race
Don’t take on too many organizing projects at one time. Do a little bit everyday to turn organizing into a lifelong habit. This will avoid the overwhelm that comes from trying to do too much at once and the pain of clutter creeping back in later if you choose to do a mammoth ‘one off’ organizing session.

Start with your home
Why? Because your home is the nucleus of who you are. It’s a proven fact that people who live in messy, unkempt houses are less organized and more apt to be late and/or forget things.
Declutter
Start organizing your home by getting rid of everything and anything you don’t need. Give it away, throw it away or sell it – it really doesn’t matter how it goes just so long as it does.
Store rarely used items
After you’ve eliminated the unnecessary, store away the items you rarely use but don’t want to get rid of. The attic or storage units that fit neatly in the garage or basement of your home will suffice for these items. Be sure you store them properly, though, so they retain their value.

Shop for organizers
Next comes the fun part – shopping for organizers. Hey, when isn’t shopping fun? But, before you shop decide what you’re shopping for to avoid wasteful purchases. Take stock of what size and type of organizers you need for each purpose. Be sure you buy enough to complete the job as there may be none left to match if you make a second trip later on. Make a list for each room – nobody’s memory is that good.
Organizers are available for everything from bills and flatware to shoes and sweaters. The best places to shop for organizers include home improvement stores for closet systems and shelving and discount stores for smaller containers and the large plastic tubs that are the ultimate essential in storage and organizing.
Get organized
When the shopping is done – USE the organizers!!! Don’t let them just become part of your clutter. Grandma knew what she was talking about when she said, a place for everything and everything in its place.
Being organized isn’t something you do. It’s really more of who you are – and someone everyone can be if they really desire to do so.
