Hallways in the home never get thought of as a room, until you have your carpets cleaned, and they charge you as though they ARE a room! Hallways have unused potential for storage, display, and even as mudrooms. Let me show you how

Hallway tables are great for display of collectibles and pictures
you can maximize your hallway usage, and count them as an ‘extra’ room!
Display: Hallway tables can act as a wonderful display area for collectibles, pictures, lamps, and other items that would clutter another space. A front hallway table is a great place to drop your keys, and know where they are tomorrow!

Book shelves in a hallway utilize a forgotten space
My Deco has an article on how to make a hallway bigger and brighter. Remember hallways don’t have to be just a corridor to another space. Make it an experience on the way.
Storage: Maximize vertical space by putting shelving, and drawers to house books or display trophies and childhood memorabilia. Apartment Therapy has a post on hallway storage and how to maximize it. Have a hallway located beside a laundry room, that can fit cabinetry? Consider putting cleaning products, and laundry cleaners out-of-the-way, and out of sight.
Mudrooms: Remember our post on mudrooms? Large hallways and foyers make great mudrooms. A place to drop your things, store your coats and hats, and take a seat while putting on your shoes.

Seating, Storage, and Space... simple, yes?

In my entry foyer hallway, I have a 46″ high buffet which has drawers and shelving for storage. I’ve also seen storage seating areas in hallways – like a bench containing a seat that has storage in it. Depending upon how much storage space is behind the walls in the hallway, you might be able to have shelving or drawers recessed in the wall to provide some storage which doesn’t interfere with the traffic flow of the hallway.
Thank you Mary for your comments!
I initially put a glass door console in my foyer however it proved to be too large for the area. Since my previous dining room was not large enough for a buffet I have temporarily moved the console to the dining area for storage & am getting an accent door chest with shelves inside for my foyer & to use for storage. We also have a small door chest with inside storage that is only 12″ deep–it would not take up too much room in a hallway & still be enough walking room to get by the piece comfortably.
